Research summary
Restless leg syndrome (RLS) and endometriosis are chronic diseases which cause a huge burden on the women, NHS resources and society in general. It is important to investigate if there are any associations between the two conditions, possibly to find common causative factors and possibly common new treatment options. Such information will allow a more holistic approach to managing the patients with the distressing symptoms associated with both these conditions. \nAIMS : We aim to examine if there is an association between endometriosis (already diagnosed with laparoscopy or with symptoms associated with endometriosis) and RLS in 500 women attending gynaecological clinics in Liverpool Women’s Hospital\nOUTCOME MEASURES : The primary outcome is the incidence of co-existing symptoms of endometriosis and RLS in gynaecological patients. Secondary objectives will be the prevalence of symptoms of RLS in gynaecological patients, correlation of the demographic features with RLS and endometriosis symptoms.\nPOPULATION ELIGIBILITY : Non-pregnant, premenopausal women of reproductive years (18-50) who are attending the specialist endometriosis clinics (100% endometriosis patients), general gynaecology clinics (20% endometriosis patients) and the colposcopy clinics (usually non-endometriosis patients) at Liverpool Women’s Hospital that will receive the questionnaires.\nWe postulate that convergence of the available treatments or novel therapies then can be more effectively utilised to improve the quality of life of the sufferers in the future. \n
