Research summary
We are conducting a programme of research called EQUIP (Enhancing the Quality of User Involvement in Care Planning in Mental Health Services). EQUIP aims to develop and evaluate a new user/carer led training package for health professionals to enhance user/carer involvement in care planning for mental health. As part of EQUIP we have developed a patient reported outcome measure (PROM) to measure how much service users and carers feel that they are involved in care planning. The PROM was developed in Study Three (13/EM/0364). We developed a short version of the PROM for mental health services to use as an audit tool. However, we do not know whether some of the items in the audit tool are more important than others.
This new study aims to examine service user and carer preferences for five different aspects of care planning included in the audit tool. This information can help services target improvements in care planning to the aspects that are most important to service users and carers.
We will ask service users and carers to complete a stated preference survey. Participants taking part in this survey will be asked to complete a questionnaire that includes 13 choice questions. Each choice question describes two different examples of a care plan. Participants will be asked to select the one they think would be better for them. Participants will also be asked to rank the characteristics of the care plan in order of importance.
We will recruit participants who are secondary care mental health service users and carers by advertising the study in two NHS Trusts and local/national mental health user/carer networks and forums as well as online sites. Participants will be able to choose to complete a paper version or an online version of the questionnaire.REC name
