Research summary
Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes that can affect vision and quality of life. Measuring how people experience their health is important for improving care and informing healthcare decisions. One widely used questionnaire, the EQ-5D, measures health-related quality of life, but it may not fully capture vision-related problems experienced by people with diabetic retinopathy.
To address this, additional questions (known as “vision bolt-ons”) have been developed to improve how well the EQ-5D reflects vision-related quality of life. This study aims to explore whether these vision bolt-ons are relevant, understandable, and meaningful for people living with diabetic retinopathy.
The study will involve approximately 25 adults diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, recruited through University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust. Participants will take part in a one-to-one interview, either online or face-to-face. During the interview, they will complete the questionnaire and describe their thoughts while answering the questions (a “think-aloud” approach). Follow-up questions will be asked to better understand their views.
Interviews will be audio-recorded with consent, transcribed, and analysed to identify common themes. All data will be anonymised and handled confidentially.
The findings will help determine whether the vision bolt-ons improve the measurement of quality of life in people with diabetic retinopathy and will inform future research and healthcare decision-making.REC name
