Research summary
Latent Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection has been implicated in some subtypes of lymphoma however little research has been done as to whether the virus is involved in the development and progression of Follicular Lymphoma (FL). This study aims to investigate lymph nodes affected by FL and transformed follicular lymphoma for markers of Epstein-Barr infection. This will be achieved by retrospectively staining resected lymph nodes from patients who have already been diagnosed with FL and transformed FL. These stained tissues will be compared to a "healthy" population of resected lymph nodes to assess whether EBV is more prevalent in the malignant tissues. An increased prevalence of EBV markers in the malignant tissue will be a strong indicator for involvement of the virus in FL and may identify EBV staining as a useful prognostic tool for this cancer.
