  • Research summary

Routinely, oxygen is administered to patients via a tight fitting face mask before a general anaesthetic to increase oxygen reserves to maximum levels in the lungs. This process takes 3 minutes and provides a margin of safety until the anaesthetist gains control of the patients' breathing. Recently an alternative oxygen delivery system has become available which delivers oxygen through the nose. This observational pilot study is designed to determine the time taken to achieve maximum levels of oxygen reserves using a heated, high flow, humidified nasal oxygen delivery system. The results of this study will be used to advise the sample size required for a planned future randomised controlled trial.
