Research summary
Antiretroviral therapy requires optimal adherence to be successful in managing HIV. Factors which influence non-adherence are critical to understanding medication management, particularly with perinatally infected HIV+ youth who are likely to have complex treatment histories and are experiencing the developmental challenges of adolescence. This study aims to investigate within-subjects situational differences in adherent and non-adherent episodes, informed by theory (the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills [IMB] model) and using both retrospective and prospective data collection. Self-efficacy, outcome expectancy and other motivation factors will be investigated. Contextual variables including situational mood, substance use and stable or changes in usual routine will also be explored.
