Research summary
Current NICE guidelines state that all patients with epilepsy should have tailored care plans agreed between the individual and their care team. This type of patient centred care takes the preferences, needs and values and outs them at the heart of their clinical care. Suggested formats for such care plans have been developed, notably by epilepsy care providers and the leading epilepsy charity in the UK, Epilepsy Action. Although care plans are available and suggested by NICE guidelines, they are not routinely used in clinical practice. This study aims to evaluate the usefulness of care plans for epilepsy patients form both patient and clinician perspective. Patients attending epilepsy clinic will be provided with a blank care plan and asked to fill it in. Feedback on the care plan will then be sought through questionnaires and focus group sessions. The date generated by this study will help inform current clinical practice and identify areas where it could be improved as well as providing the basis for the formulation of more structured trials into the benefits of care plans.
