Research summary
Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a rare cause of acute myocardial infarction with an increased incidence in young women, particularly in the peri and post-partum period. To date research into this condition in the UK and internationally has been very limited. We propose to undertake (i) detailed vascular phenotyping of 100 patients with a history of SCAD (and matched controls) to determine if the coronary abnormality in SCAD is part of a wider arteriopathy and (ii) investigate whether predilection to SCAD is genetically-based by undertaking whole exome sequencing of 10 patient-parent trios with follow-up studies of a larger sample if this identifies potential pathogenic mutations. Our project, which has strong support from national cardiovascular societies and patients, will establish a long-term portal for the on-going recruitment and follow-up of SCAD patients. This proposal is further strengthened by our existing collaboration in SCAD research with the Mayo clinic USA.
