Research summary
A detailed understanding of the epidemiology of stab injury is essential to guide preventative initiatives, which have received substantial backing from central government in recent years. In keeping with other forms of violent crime, the majority of perpetrators and victims of stabbings fall into the 16-24 age group; however, there are concerns that knife-related violence is increasing among younger teenagers and children. A detailed understanding of the age-related variations in epidemiology and outcomes of stab injuries is lacking. We aim to perform a retrospective analysis of patients who have presented to our institution in order to characterize the patterns of stab injury in our catchment area. Specifically, we intend to geographically map locations of incidents, and to examine the relationship between patient demographics (including age and socioeconomic status) and risk of injury. Trends in incidence and outcomes over time will also be examined.
