Data collection arrangements
All patients with coeliac disease residing in the catchment area of the Derby hospitals are on the data base. Names, dates of birth and death (where appropriate), and dates of diagnosis of coeliac disease are held on the data base. The data base has been built up over many years during clinical practice and used for clinical and research purposes. It is complete to the end of 2014 and comprises some 2650 patients. For those patients who have died (334 cases)the primary cause of death will be obtained from the Office of National Statistics. The analysis of the data will determine for a range of conditions such as malignant and cardiovascular diseases the risk of dying for those with coeliac disease compared with the general population. This will be of interest to patients and their cares. The risks are probably going to be very low and this will reassure patients. The cohort has been very carefully documented so that the results will be robust. Trends in diagnosis of coeliac disease through the years will also be determined and the results will help to design strategies for the follow up of patients.
Research programme
The patients with coeliac disease on the data base all reside in the catchment area of the Derby hospitals in Southern Derbyshire. The data base has been built over many years by one clinician (Dr GKT Holmes, Consultant Gastroenterologist)and has been used in clinical practice and for research and audit purposes through the years. It is complete to the end of 2014 for the purposes of the present study.
