  • Research summary

The aim of this educational project (PhD) is to study biomarkers associated with Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), a newly discovered chronic immune-mediated oesophageal condition, using a Coiled Oesophageal String Test (CEST) to collect oesophageal fluid. An ELISA assay will test IgG4 oesophageal fluid collected from adult patients samples attending EoE clinics. The research is interested to check: if IgG present in the oesophageal fluid is linked to reflux or EoE, associations of Ig4 with food triggers/ seasonal changes and how Eosinophil Cationic Protein (ECP) can monitor disease activity and general EoE Biomarkers. The project will be conducted at the University Hospital Southampton (UHS) Immunology department and reviewed (only anonymised patient data) by Portsmouth University. The research project will be run between 09/2019 and 09/2023. The study has the potential to eliminate the need for invasive diagnostic procedures (e.g. endoscopies, biopsies), reduce diagnostic costs, expand the knowledge regarding treatment and management of EoE and to help to find strategies to improve the well being of patients suffering from this condition.
