  • Research summary

The purpose of this study is to design a new diagnostic test for ‘eosinophilic diseases’. Eosinophilic diseases include conditions such as Eosinophilic Esophagitis, amongst others, which are currently very difficult to diagnose and to monitor without uncomfortable tests. Investigators will be looking at a special type of white blood cell, the eosinophil, which is known to be raised in eosinophilic diseases. They will be investigating how the eosinophil looks, how it behaves, and to see if it is different in those children with eosinophilic diseases as compared to healthy children.

The study will take place at the Great North Children’s Hospital and Newcastle University. Parents/guardians of the children will be provided with detailed information including a thorough explanation of the research and who to speak to if they have any questions. Every child and parent will be given a “disease specific” patient information leaflet outlining the study and the fact they will require an "extra amount" of blood taken alongside the one blood sample in clinic. Parents will have access to a 24 hour telephone number manned by paediatric research nurses, and paediatric consultants who will give appropriate advice. Informed consent will be taken from the parent/guardian should they wish for their child to take part. If consent is given, an extra amount of blood would be taken in clinic as part of a routine blood test. This blood sample is then to be taken to the University laboratories where it will be analysed. Data gathered will be sent, anonymously, to Swansea University where it will be further analysed.
