Research summary
This study will assist in the final design stages of a new medical device that reduces the amount of nitrous oxide wasted into the atmosphere. Specifically we are aiming to determine the external casing design and the physical characteristics of certain external components. It is important that the design is safe and easy to use, and that it's size and appearance are suitable for its intended locations of use, e.g. birthing rooms.
We will identify participants who are either NHS staff who work with Entonox or members of the public who have received (or might receive) it as a treatment. We will only include participants in the study after full informed consent. Participants will be involved in some or all of the following steps in our usability evaluation: 1) participate in focus groups, 2) assist with usability testing of the device or components in simulated clinical environments and 3) evaluating the usability of supporting materials (instructions etc).
The specific involvement of individual participants will vary depending on the stage of device development and the requirements of the device designer / manufacturer at each stage. Individual participants way be invited to participate on multiple occasions but we will take steps to minimise the time/travel burden of involvement where possible.
