Research summary
The study title is Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) inpatient views on the ‘Choosing Wisely’ 5 Questions as a shared decision-making aid within an acute hospital setting: A qualitative study.
Realistic Medicine (a Scottish Government incentive) are promoting the use of the ‘Choosing Wisely’ 5 Questions as a direct and easy way of enabling shared decision-making. Patients are urged to investigate the various choices available to them by asking: is this test, treatment or procedure really needed, what are the potential benefits and risks, what are the possible side effects, are there simpler, safer or alternative treatment options, and what would happen if I did nothing?
Previous literature has focussed on the views of outpatients, physicians and patients within primary care, whereas this project aims to explore adult inpatient views of the ‘Choosing Wisely’ 5 Questions. Participants will only be involved in the data collection process of the study (semi-structured interviews) which will take place within the ENT ward in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.
No standardised shared decision-making aid is currently being used within the local health board meaning approaches to providing patient centred care between healthcare professionals can differ as there is no set guidance to refer to and patients are not as involved in their own care decisions as they possibly could be. This study may therefore allow the researcher to make recommendations to inform future development of the ‘Choosing Wisely’ 5 questions as a shared decision-making aid within the local hospital setting. The study will take approximately 4 months to complete.
