  • Research summary

Depression is one of the most common complications of pregnancy, occuring in 10-15% of pregnancies. Studies have found that women can be reluctant to seek professional support for depressive symptoms due to social stigma, potential long waiting times for counselling and feeling unsure regarding anti-depressant use in pregnancy. We have therefore identified a need for a low-cost, non-pharmacological intervention to help treat depressive symptoms during pregnancy. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) aims to improve feelings of depression and anxiety by encouraging and teaching more positive patterns of thinking. Computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (cCBT), is the delivery of this therapy via the internet. It is effective, acceptable and recommended by National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) as an intervention for depression in the general population. Currently there is little evidence evaluating cCBT in the pregnant population. ‘Enjoy Your Bump (EYB)’ is a cCBT package which has been designed specifically for pregnancy . The aim of this study is to evaluate the acceptableness and effectiveness of this programme for women experiencing mild-moderate depressive symptoms in pregnancy.

We plan to approach pregnant women who disclose experiencing low mood before the 32nd week of pregnancy. Those who score ≥3 on a standardised depression screening tool will be eligible to take part. We plan to take measures of depression, anxiety and parenting self-efficacy via standardised assessment questionnaires before intervention, post intervention and 12 weeks postnatal. We also plan to assess the mother-baby bond and gather feedback on participant experience in the postnatal period. ‘Enjoy Your Bump’ delivers 5 sessions via online slideshows. We anticipate participants completing one session per week, with weekly remote support from a member of the research team. The results from this study will help inform us whether this is a resource which should be made more widely available to women on the NHS.
