Research summary
Ethical approval is sought for Stage-4 onwards of this 6-stage study. EPPIC is funded by a NIHR Knowledge Mobilisation Research Fellowship (June 2016-May 2019) awarded to the principal investigator Kate Beckett (KB). The study has two key aims: 1) to improve NHS support for injured adults’ psychological needs and management of common post-injury psychological sequelae. 2) test an innovative means of knowledge sharing and establish whether it can lead to evidence informed service improvements. The 6 stages are:
1) Comprehensively explore patient, practitioner and expert/research perspectives on the psychological needs and care of injured adults
2) Systematically compare these 3 different perspectives and identify where they differ in ways that are important for patient outcomes
3) Represent the data garnered in Stages 1-2 in a play telling the patient story as conceived by these 3 different perspectives
4) Invite the same 3 groups to attend a participatory theatre workshop where they will be facilitated in interacting with the plays’ content using Forum Theatre techniques to help them share knowledge, engage with the story and safely test out new practices or service improvements. Workshops will be filmed to inform Stages 5/65) Develop 2 short edited films from workshop films to; 1) disseminate this KM approach to clinical and academic audiences, 2) promote the FT workshop to other trauma services
6) Evaluate: a) the process in terms of improved practitioner understanding and support of injured adults’ psychological needs or new interventions to address post-injury psychological disorders and, b) the method as a means of sharing knowledge leading to improvements in practice
Stages 1-2 are already complete, 3 is underway. This application seeks approval for Stage-4 recruitment of previously injured adults, NHS practitioners and experts in post-injury psychological problems e.g. PTSD to contribute to Stage-4 filmed participatory workshops and provide data for Stages-5/6.
