Research summary
NHS Health Checks estimate the 10-year risk of heart disease and stroke using a standard calculation which requires arm blood pressure and weight measurements. The calculation could be made more accurate by supplementing with ankle blood pressure and waist measurements.
Patients being assessed for risk in two general practices will be recruited. The nurse will employ a new device called Huntleigh ABIlity (CE marked and approved) to automatically record ankle and arm blood pressures. Waist measurements will also be taken. Patient records will be accessed to ascertain any heart disease or stroke. The follow-up period will be short, from 5 months, suitable to assess feasibility of undertaking a full-scale study.
To ascertain the views of nurses, patients, and GPs, a qualitative researcher will undertake interviews with two GPs, two Healthcare assistants, one research nurse, and 12 patients.
This feasibility study may lead to a full study based throughout West Yorkshire. In order to progress from this feasibility stage to a full study, the following progression criteria should be met:
(1) More than 50% of eligible patients consent to participate.
(2) Measurements and follow-up data are obtained on at least 90%.
(3) The additional measurements take <10 minutes.
(4) Qualitative interviews with patients and nurses show the additional measurements acceptable.
(5) The general practices declare that they will participate in a full-scale study.
To demonstrate the analysis, time to heart attack or stroke will be assessed. The practices have a suitable mix of patients to check that the analysis is valid for everyone. The focus is feasibility and assessing if the progression criteria are met.
The interview data will be studied to assess participants' views.REC name
