  • Research summary

The aim of the research is to carry out a pilot study of a new method of measuring energy production in the brain in two clinical conditions that have been linked to faulty energy production- bipolar disorder and chronic fatigue syndrome. The measurement of energy production will be carried out using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) which employs a powerful magnet to identify biochemical changes in the brain in a non-invasive way. We will use brief exposure to a flashing light to stimulate energy production in the visual part of the brain and see if energy production differs in patients with bipolar disorder and CFS compared to controls. A positive result would lead onto larger studies to confirm the findings and eventually new avenues for improving diagnosis and treatment of these conditions. The work will take place in the University of Oxford at the John Radcliffe Hospital and is funded by the University Department of Psychiatry.
