  • Research summary

It is known that interventions like islet transplantation improve glucose control by allowing the body to produce its own insulin. We have observed a 7kg weight loss in our islet transplant recipients over a 12 month period and the reason for this is not clear. There may be changes both in energy intake but there may also be changes in energy expenditure (the amount of energy “burned”). The purpose of this study is to work out energy intake and energy expenditure in two groups of patients.\n1.Patients on the islet transplant waiting list before islet transplantation and twelve months after islet transplantation.\n2.Type I diabetes patients listed for insulin pump therapy before insulin pump therapy starts and for 12 months during insulin pump therapy. \n\n We will understand the energy changes following islet transplantation, their relationship with body weight, if insulin therapy leads to decreased energy expediture and gain objective information regarding activity, diet and fear of hypoglycaemia preceding and post islet-transplantation and pump therapy leading to the improved management of patients with hypoglycaemia. \n\nA control group of patients without diabetes will be studied only once.\n\n
