Research summary
The response of breast cancer to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) is variable and no good predictors of response are available. Knowledge of likely response prior to treatment would be helpful to patients and clinicians as this would influence whether to give chemotherapy before or after surgery. The hypothesis is that pre-treatment breast density measurements in the contralateral breast are associated with response to NACT. Mammograms will be retrieved for women who have recently had NACT for breast cancer. Breast density will be measured from mammograms using software and also by expert visual assessment. Response to NACT will be scored by pathologists using standard techniques. Correlation between breast density and NACT response will be assessed using the t-test. This will be a retrospective analysis using routinely available images and data and will not require any intervention for the patients.
