Data collection arrangements
This database will store data from all patients attending Endocrinology clinics at the Regional Centre for Endocrinology and Diabetes in the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast. At present no searchable data is held on patients attending the clinic. The proposed database (core database) will store the patient's name, healthcare number and diagnosis. The purpose of the core database is to allow relevant subjects to be identified for subsequent retrospective or prospective studies. Any additional information required for future studies, which is not recorded in the core database will be obtained from the patient's electronic healthcare record or chart. This will therefore generate disease specific databases which, once created, will be anonymised for data analysis. No sensitive data will be recorded on the core database. The database will be created during clinic reviews. Informed written consent will be sought at the time of clinic attendance to the Regional Centre for Endocrinology and Diabetes. Records will not be reviewed prior to consent. Instead participants will be provided with an information leaflet about the database on arrival to clinic and will discuss and provide consent for inclusion with their caring clinician just prior to clinic appointment.
Research programme
This database will support retrospective and prospective research in the field of Endocrinology which encompasses many rare conditions. The Regional Centre for Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Royal Victoria Hospital is the tertiary referral point for rare Endocrine conditions throughout Northern Ireland. The database will support retrospective research within Northern Ireland but also collaborative work with the wider Irish National Pituitary Network. Once established this will faciliate collaborative work with other large Endocrine centres across the UK offering patients in Northern Ireland the opportunity to partake in future prospective studies in the relevant fields.
