Research summary
How does End of Life Care and the views of stakeholders fit with the ambitions of national policy? Insights from a case study.
Research aims:
This study will explore current UK End of Life Strategy and Policy (both national and local). It will ask how national policy influences and guides local practice. It will explore how successful national policy is in helping to deliver an effective, consistent and sustainable service and the extent to which policy aspirations fit with the views and requirements of stakeholders (patients, relative, clinicians and commissioners). How will the research be conducted and who is involved?
There are two phases to the research:
i) Scoping Study
Phase one will include an analysis of literature, UK policy documents and interviews with key stakeholders to explore the development of national policy and to examine the key challenges. This phase of the work is ongoing.ii) Case Studies
Case studies will be carried out within Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) each located within a different Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP) local area. CCGs have been identified to represent a variety of commissioning models and demographic contexts. The case studies will involve: review of existing data and relevant documents; observation of relevant professional meetings and in depth interviews with managers, clinicians, patients and relatives/carers.What is required from case study participants?
Participants (including managers, clinicians, patients and relatives/carers) will be invited to undertake one in depth interview lasting between 30-60 minutes. Participating CCGs will be required to help identify a small sample of patients, either from their End of Life Register or through professionals working in community or acute settings.Outputs:
Recommendations to help develop effective national policy.Duration:
The study is part of a PhD scheduled to be completed by September 2020. Field work is likely to last eight months.REC name
