Research summary
The Macular Service in the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust (BHSCT) has a large collection of images and clinical information on patients with diseases that might lead to blindness if untreated. The two most common ones are age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, but the service looks after people who have other sight threatening diseases where fluid leaks out of the vessels in the back of the eye. The diseases are most commonly treated by a specific type of injection into the diseased eye, called an anti-VEGF injection. Many patients respond well and achieve better vision or maintain their good vision for longer, some still lose vision over time. We wish to examine the images and the clinical data using new mathematical and image analysis tools; these new tools might allow a better understanding as to why some people respond well to treatment and others do not. Being able to understand and predict the the response to treatment variation will allow to establish the best treatment plan for each patient.
