  • Research summary

This research will involve a qualitative investigation of the key issues relating to the therapeutic relationship between people with learning disabilities and their therapists, in an NHS Adult Learning Disabilities Service. In particular, it will focus on how the therapeutic relationship facilitates empowerment. Semi-structured interviews will be carried out, which will be analysed using interpretative phenomenological methodology, to identify key themes and the ideographic experiences of therapist and people with learning disabilities. \nThe importance of the therapeutic relationship in Counselling Psychology has been widely accepted for many years, although existing literature has highlighted the sparsity of supportive research within the population of learning disabilities. Gaps also exist in the area of social justice and empowerment in terms of this population group. This project aims to contribute to the current information available and to highlight key areas of importance within a UK NHS service. \n
