Research summary
Two million children are admitted to hospital every year in the UK and between 59 and 94% will experience pain, with 27- 40% of them experiencing moderate to severe pain (Kozlowski et al 2014, Groenewald at al 2012). It has been recognised that the lack of involvement of parents in their child’s pain may contribute to children experiencing unrelieved pain. A previous study (Simons et al 2020) in which a framework of effective pain management was developed, found that empowering parents to be involved in pain management and adopting an individual approach to a child and family were integral aspects of promoting the effective management of children’s pain.
This follow-on study aims to provide resources for parents that will enable them to become more involved in the management of their child’s pain in hospital.
We will interview parents, using practice-based scenarios (vignettes) to identify their perspectives on the empowerment of parents. The information gathered will be used to develop a short video (animation) which will be made freely available. The animation will be distributed across a network of UK pain specialists (The Paediatric Pain Travelling club) to promote its uptake and use.
Six months after its launch we will survey pain specialists as to their views on the impact / value of the animation.REC name
