Research summary
The Institute of Mental Health, University of Nottingham, was commissioned to conduct evaluative research of an intervention (Individual Placement and Support)(IPS) for individuals with mental health problems within the criminal justice system. The intervention aims to get offenders into competitive employment as soon as possible after release from prison. This will take place primarily at HMP Featherstone, HMP Drake Hall, and HMP Brinsford. However, the intervention will also expand to other prisons within the West Midlands area. The intervention will last for a total of three years across all prisons. The research has two strands; an individual's perception of the service they are receiving and how they feel IPS impacts upon their mental health, re-offending, and social stability. In addition to the examination of employment outcomes, changes in mental health, recidivism, and social stability of each individual using the appropriate measurements.
