Research summary
The Institute of Mental Health, University of Nottingham, was asked to look at the effectiveness of an intervention (Individual Placement and Support)(IPS) for individuals with mental health problems within the criminal justice system. The intervention aims to get offenders into competitive employment as soon as possible after release from prison. This will take place primarily at HMP Featherstone, HMP Drake Hall, and HMP Brinsford. However, the intervention will also expand to other prisons, and offenders within the community, within the West Midlands area. The intervention will last for a total of three years across all prisons and within the community. The research has two parts; an individual's view of the help they are receiving to find and keep employment and how they feel IPS impacts upon their mental health, re-offending, and social stability. In addition to the number of jobs gained, changes in mental health, re-convictions, and the social stability of each individual using the appropriate validated measures.
