  • Research summary

This study aims to identify different emotional outburst profiles in deaf children using the emotional outburst questionnaire which has been developed to gather detailed information from parents/ carers in a time-efficient way. A further aim is to validate this measure within the population of deaf and hearing-impaired children. As there is limited research into deaf children and young people, despite there being high levels of emotional outbursts, this measure may encourage further research within this population. With more research, it is hoped that a deeper understanding of the contributing factors that lead to emotional outbursts will be developed and thus, enable further development of individualised interventions for the person and family.

Participants will be recruited from the Deaf Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service for Central England within the Dudley and Walsall Mental Health Partnership Trust. Recruitment will also be employed within schools and support groups for deaf and hearing-impaired children. Participants will be required to complete the questionnaire with a sub-group completing the questionnaire a second time. It is estimated to take up to 30 minutes to an hour to complete each questionnaire.

Questionnaire data will be analysed, and descriptive statistics will be provided in order to differentiate outburst profiles based on theoretical and clinical considerations; if there are enough participants clustering analysis will be considered. Test-retest reliability and inter-informant reliability will also be measured.
