Research summary
As they age, some people get mild memory and thinking problems. For some, these problems do not get worse. For others, they can progress to something more serious like dementia. It is often difficult for doctors to know who will get worse - and how quickly they will get worse - and who will remain stable.
Our research shows that risk of dementia is higher when changes in behaviour and personality happen with mild memory complaints. We think this information can be used by doctors to help spot those people most at risk of dementia and speed up diagnosis in these cases. We are going to ask 50 people who have been referred to NHS memory services or Community Mental Health services but who do not have dementia to complete some questionnaires relating to their memory and the mental health. We will ask participants how they feel about these questionnaires so that we can determine if changes need to be made.
This project is about helping people get the right diagnosis quicker. This study will tell us if assessment if the questionnaires we ask are usable in NHS settings. This is known as a acceptability and feasibility study. We need to know this basic information first to help plan bigger studies in a cost-effective way. Once we have this information, we will be able to plan bigger studies that us whether doctors assessing these symptoms is helpful when they are making their diagnosis.
