Research summary
The aim of the study is to understand how the East Yorkshire autism diagnostic pathway is experienced by families and how it sits in relation to other support services with the aim of creating a more user friendly patient journey. The study addresses one of the core strategic objectives in the East Riding CCG operational plan, to improve the physical, mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. The deliverable actions within the plan particularly focus on reduction of waiting times for children and young people on the autism waiting list. In addition in line with the transforming care agenda there is a focus on prevention of those with autism requiring more invasive care. The study is funded by the ER CCG. A survey has been developed with parents to gather important patient experience data about the autism diagnostic pathway and how it links with other services pre and post diagnosis. This will produce data that can help inform the provision of high quality services in EY that ensure a cohesive patient experience from pre-diagnosis to post.
The questions that this project seeks to answer via survey method are:
1. Are families and young people accessing support prior to accessing diagnostic services? If so what are they and did they make a difference to the outcomes for their child.
2. What are the potential barriers in the system and the possible impact on the child and parent carer?
3. How does the diagnostic process aid understanding of the child/young person?
4. Does the process and recommendations lead to any measurable change in mental , physical and emotional wellbeing ; if so what are they .
5. How has this been impacted upon by the pandemic?
The study will last 12 months and gather data from parent/carers who have accessed the pathway in the last 2 years.REC name
