Research summary
This qualitative study is part of a programme of research led by Nerys Astbury and Susan Jebb at the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences titled ‘Exploring the Long-term Outcomes following a PrEgnancy with gestational diabetes mellitus’ (ELOPE-GDM). The overall aim of the project is to explore the long term health outcomes, healthcare costs and personal experiences of women who are diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellites (GDM). SP and JR are Co-Is on the project grant and are leading part 1 of the project which is a qualitative study exploring the lived experiences of women with GD.
The aim of the study is to explore women’s’ experiences of being tested for and living with GDM. This will include exploring women’s’ motivations and opportunities for making lifestyle changes to manage their GDM, reduce the risk of birth complications and prevent progression to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). If successful, the findings will inform future research on the development of novel interventions to prevent and treat GDM and reduce the risks of developing associated diseases later in life.
The results will provide information for women who are pregnant or planning pregnancy and their families, it will inform the development of clinical guidelines and the commissioning of new services which may help prevent and treat GDM more effectively.REC name
