  • Data collection arrangements

    1. Samples from pregnant women. Participants will be informed of the study prior to attendance at their antenatal clinical appointment. Informed consent will be obtained on arrival at their antenatal blood test appointment. Blood samples will be collected at the same time as their clinical blood tests to avoid additional needle pricks.
    2. Infant samples. Following parental consent, we will store any residual blood samples taken for clinical tests from newborn babies admitted to the intensive care unit.

All blood samples will be prepared and stored in the freezers within the King’s College London, Department of Women and Children’s Health until use, or transferred to UK Biosample centre in Milton Keynes if additional storage capacity is required.

  • Research programme

The eLIXIR Tissue Bank will support research into problems which can occur at the earliest stages of life, and their influence on long term health. These problems may occur in pregnancy and influence the health of the fetus as it develops, or during the first few days of a baby’s life after delivery. We know that the longer-term health of the mother and/or her child may be affected. By taking samples of blood from mothers and their babies and studying the biological chemicals in their blood we hope to be able to pinpoint exactly what causes these longer-term problems. Knowing what the cause is provides us with the first step to prevention of these problems.
