Research summary
Multiple, worldwide research studies present low employment figures for transplant recipients. Therefore, this research will critically explore the impact of solid organ transplantation on experiences of paid employment. In doing so, it aims to identify potential facilitators and barriers to post-transplant employment. Additionally, it will help assess whether current employment support provided by formal support services adequately prepares and accurately reflects the lived experience of patients.
This research consists of two stages; an evidence synthesis and interviews. The qualitative evidence synthesis will be conducted to explore what is already known about the impact transplantation has on paid employment. After competition of this, qualitative, semi-structured interviews will be conducted with two groups: solid-organ transplant recipients (n=<30) and formal support services (n=<20). Transplant recipient participants will be recruited through opportunity sampling at the Institute of Transplantation, Freeman Hospital. Approximate interview length will be 1 hour. Interview topics include: their experiences of paid employment, what employment means to them, facilitators and barriers to the process, what employment support was available and whether they felt this was sufficient.
Formal support services participants will be recruited through opportunity sampling. These individuals include healthcare professionals who work at the Institute of Transplantation and those who work within the UK transplant charity sector. Approximate interview length will be 1 hour. Interviews will ask their views about providing employment support to transplant recipients and their reflections on preliminary findings from transplant recipients.
All participants will be offered the option of remote interviews (Microsoft teams or telephone) or in-person interviews at Freeman Hospital. Data will be analysed using reflexive, thematic analysis.REC name
