Research summary
Self-management of hearing loss requires both dedication and motivation. As first-time hearing aid users cannot be intrinsically motivated to persevere with hearing aids, this study aims to engage and challenge first-time hearing aid users by implementing something called ‘controlled motivation’. The purpose of this study is to examine whether some external pressure will contribute to hearing aid perseverance. \n\nThere are two tasks that participants will have to complete with regards to ‘controlled motivation’: (i) complete a hearing aid checklist that tracks the number of hours used, and (ii) tell 3 friends and 3 family about being in the programme and share their progress. During all interviews and throughout the programme, the student researcher will engage in ‘motivational interviewing’ and provide ‘autonomy support’ to all participants. A Treatment self-regulation questionnaire (TSRQ) will be administered in order to assess type of motivation prior to, and at the end of the study. \n\nThe study will take place between 2018-2019 with potential participants being patients who attend the audiology clinic at NHS Borders General Hospital. This is a qualitative study that involves analysing of the interview data.
