Research summary
When teeth and their surrounding tissues suffer traumatic injuries, they can be damaged. The extent of the damage is related to the type of injury a tooth has suffered. The most severe injuries include teeth being pushed up into the gum, as well as teeth being knocked out. One of the most severe side effects of damage to an adult tooth is that the tooth can be dissolved away by the surrounding bone (resorption) in an attempt to heal the damage caused by the injury.
There are very few options to stop the process of resorption once it begins, and this can happen very quickly. One option to halt resorption includes dressing the inside of the tooth with a medicine called Vitapex. There are numerous cases that have demonstrated that using Vitapex works in teeth that have had severe injuries.
This study plans to re-assess patients who previously had Vitapex used in their teeth to see if this method works over a longer period of time.
