Research summary
Aim: The aim of the pilot study is to inform methodology for a larger study with the aim of providing preliminary data regarding the outcome measures in a cohort group of older adults (65 or older) with chronic MSK pain receiving osteopathic treatment over 12 weeks.
Primary Question: Will participants report better outcome measures at the end of a 12 week period of osteopathic intervention compared to initial outcome measures?
Justification of Study: There is little research concerning the involvement of osteopathic treatment in pain management for older adults. However, anecdotally, many have found osteopathy helpful in reducing pain and improving quality of life. The aim of this study is to bridge that gap by monitoring a group of older adults receiving osteopathic treatment.
Sample Group: The sample group is a group of 12 older adults suffering with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Participants will be recruited through social prescribers based within local GP practices.
Methodology:
1. Recruitment of participants
2. Screening for exclusion and inclusion criteria
3. Informed consent obtained
4. Participant assigned with osteopathic practitioner
5. Six treatment sessions over 12 weeks at weeks 0,1,2,4,6,8
6. One week between informed consent and first treatment session
7. Baseline PROMs questionnaires will be completed prior to first treatment session
8. At weeks 6 and 12 follow-up PROMs questionnaires will be completed by patientsOutcome Measures:
1. Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NRS)
2. UCLA 3 Item Loneliness Scale
3. MSK – HQ
4. Short Form Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (SWEMWBS)
5. Patient-Specific Functional ScaleLocation of Study:
