  • Research summary

Tooth decay affects up to 1/3 of children under 8 in the UK. I am carrying out research to find out how tooth decay and its treatment can affect children. Although we know about the symptoms that tooth decay can cause, we don’t know much about how children and young people feel and how decay and treatment affects them, or how this impacts on their families. We hope this research will help us find out more and could improve treatment for children in future.

We will be looking at children with tooth decay who are having treatment for tooth decay under a general anaesthetic (being put to sleep). Any child aged 5-16 years who is able to understand written English and their parent/ guardian who come to the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital (CCDH) will be eligible, if they are having treatment for tooth decay under general anaesthetic.

Parents and children who come to CCDH will be asked if they want to take part at their first appointment. If they agree, the parent/guardian and child will be asked to fill in a questionnaire and then repeat the same questionnaires 3 months after the child has completed their treatment. Questionnaires can be completed on the visit the clinic, or the questionnaire can be completed at home and returned in a stamped addressed envelope provided. Questionnaires should take about 20 minutes to complete.

Permission to access to the child’s clinical records will also be required. The purpose of this is to record details about the child’s teeth and any treatment they have received.

When the study is finished I will look at all the information that I have gained. I will then write a report on my findings and send a copy to all who took part.
