Research summary
Denture hygiene is an important issue for patients due to its effect on the oral mucosa, bad taste and bad breath. There is a paucity of evidence informing patients and dental health professionals about the optimal cleansing regime. This pilot study aims to assess whether daily use of a proprietary denture cleaning agent is more effective than weekly use. Patients wearing a full upper denture will be recruited and after consent will be randomised to one of two denture cleansing regimes for one week. After a wash out period the subjects will then follow the second regime.
Clinical examination, staining and assessment of denture plaque, patients experience, microbiological sampling will be carried out. The study design is a crossover randomised controlled clinical trial comparing daily and weekly use of a denture cleansing agent at each visit. We aim to measure differences in plaque accumulation, staining, bacterial and fungal colonisation and patient experience while following the two different denture cleansing regimes. This small study will inform dentists and patients about optimal denture care and will for the basis of the methodology and power calculation data for larger clinical studies.
