  • Research summary

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy of women worldwide. Being diagnosed with breast cancer has been shown to be a severe stressor. Coping resources play an important role in maintaining adequate functioning when facing such a life event. Such coping strategies have been shown to be vital in assisting women to adapt to a diagnosis of breast cancer. Immediate breast reconstruction at the time of mastectomy with preservation of the breast form has been shown to have a positive influence on breast cancer patients. At present there are no studies to show that reconstruction changes mechanism of coping for such patients. To help patients cope better with their diagnosis it is important to understand more how individual treatments such as breast reconstruction effects such coping strategies. This a prospective cohort questionnaire study using a validated questionnaire the Brief Cope Scale. Questionnaires will sent out to two cohorts of patients who had a mastectomy and immediate breast reconstruction or mastectomy alone over a 10 year period 2003 to 2013 in Shropshire . Demographics of patients such as age, ethinicty and marital status will also be included. Patients will be identified using the Somerset cancer database and will include patients who required mastectomy for DCIS or invasive disease without involved lymph nodes. Cohorts will be matched for age and year of diagnosis. Questionnaires will be sent out to all patients identified, with a reminder letter at 6 weeks. Data will be collated using SPSS Version 19. Statistical analysis of results will be performed using independent T-test.
