Research summary
This application is to support a project with a long record of success and productivity. The cohort was established first in 1984. The interest and importance of the research area of drug problems has allowed for development into several areas of connected work and collaborations with many colleagues.
The cohort are a group of individuals who have injected heroin at some time in their lives. The purpose of the project has been to study this group in detail over time. Several publications have established this project as a uniquely important insight into all aspects of heroin use. The current, and final, project is to study causes of death in the group and to report on how this compares to similar studies around the World.
The database has been kept in the NHS practice at Muirhouse and various spin off projects have been separately funded and approved by the relevant ethical committees (above, see A5-2)REC name
