Data collection arrangements
All samples, except the sudden death cases, will be retrieved within the mortuary Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (NHS hospital mortuary) and transferred to the brain bank, while the sudden death tissue samples will be retrieved from the City Mortuary. All samples will be stored at Chancellor's building Edinburgh, within secure University of Edinburgh accommodation Written consent for use of tissue in research is obtained in all cases prior to tissue release for research. Some cases will have pre-mortem consent if the patient has capacity, but most cases, again except the sudden death cases, will have a hospital post mortem consent form signed by relatives. Sudden death cases are instructed by the Procurators Fiscal and are undertaken under their authority.
All relatives have the opportunity to withdraw consent at any time.Research programme
Tissue within the Edinburgh Brain Bank will support translational research in neuroscience. We have already provided tissue to many research groups, locally, nationally and internationally, resulting in many high impact publications, highlighting the need for such tissue. Researchers must be working in recognised research facilities, and although the brain bank does not directly assess the research question the local management committee may assess the appropriateness of tissue release, and may require input from the Steering committee.
