  • Research summary

Two previous clinical studies (SPOT and SMART2) involved the collection 4mm diameter punch biopsies of the skin. These biopsies were analysed as part of their respective studies, however excess tissue remains. Prior to the collection of these samples, consent for the future use of this tissue was obtained from all participants. Using this excess material will avoid the collection of similar specimens from comparable individuals in future studies, by utilising the samples we already have. This project outlines the rationale and methodology for retaining and using these samples. The pathophysiology of atopic dermatitis/eczema (AD) is complex and still not fully understood. There is a need for continued research to elucidate the processes involved in driving skin inflammation to better understand the causes of the disorder, identify new targets for treatment and test and develop new therapeutic interventions. These samples will add understanding to the pathogenesis of AD through histological analysis of tissue changes and potential mediators (such as ADAM17, EGFR and IL36R).
