Research summary
The research study will compare echocardiogram data of high level triathletes with non athletes. The “athletes heart“ has been reported to elicit structural and functional adaptations consistent with the type of exercise training being performed. The purpose of undertaking this research is to gain a better understanding of the physiological adaptions of the heart subsequent to long term endurance training of triathletes and if this has any meaningful difference to controls at rest. \nThe research study aims to recruit triathletes partaking in endurance training for a minimum if 9 hours a week for at least 3 years. The data collection will take place at Hammersmith Hospital Echocardiography department, in which each participant will be required to complete a health questionnaire and a consent form before having an echocardiogram (totaling to approximately 45 minutes for each participant). Imperial College London negligent and non-negligent insurance cover will apply.
