Research summary
The overall objective of this study is to facilitate early identification of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) preterm neonates who are at risk of developing chronic pulmonary hypertension (cPHT) secondary to chronic neonatal lung disease (CNLD). The secondary objectives of this study are to investigate the short and long term clinical relevance of cPHT in preterm neonates and create a representative cohort of at-risk neonates to enable future longitudinal studies. This is important, as although CNLD is known to be an important determinant of adverse short and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes, the long-term relevance of cPHT has never been studied. Further, the cardio-pulmonary sequelae of neonatal cPHT and its burden on disorders of childhood and early adulthood remain unknown. The successful completion of this study will pave the way for future studies investigating cardio-respiratory health during childhood.
