  • Research summary

One patient public engagement group (participatory design workshop) will be conducted initially to gather informal feedback for developing semi-structured interview questions (Interview Schedule) in this study. The purpose is to incorporate service user and staff voices in the research development, offering flexibility for in-person or teleconference participation. Workshop attendees will be chosen based on their relationship to potential participants eligible for the study e.g. the study participants will be carers of the workshop attendees. Staff supporting the peer mentorship project will also be invited to the workshop.

Facilitated by the principal investigator, the workshop will present a draft interview schedule for feedback. No transcription or analysis will occur during the workshop. Post-session, the facilitator will provide informal debrief and signposting. The workshop aims to garner thoughts on content and design of the interview, with a focus on what young individuals (and potentially staff) find relevant to ask their parents and carers about mentorship.

The workshop will involve being presented with the draught interview schedule, asked for thoughts on the content and design. Followed by general consultation about what these young persons (and potentially staff in the workshop) feel it would be relevant to ask their parents and carers about the mentorship groups they have been attending.

The study involves parents and carers participating in the North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust CAMHS eating disorder service’s supervised Peer Mentorship Programme. Interviews (up to 1 hour) follow the participatory design workshop, incorporating workshop feedback through supervisor consultations to maximize participant input, focusing on experiences of receiving parental mentorship. Phone invitations will be extended to potential participants meeting inclusion criteria, with recorded interviews stored securely for later transcription.

Reflexive Thematic Analysis will be employed for qualitative interview data analysis, chosen for its alignment with the study's aims to explore commonalities and themes in the experiences of parents and carers receiving mentorship. This methodology is suitable for smaller sample sizes, as in the population group under investigation (Braun & Clarke, 2022). For detailed analytical methods, refer to the section below.
