Research summary
In this project we seek to find out how nurses and therapists can support young children (3-6 year old) in activities such as getting dressed, eating their foods, using the bathroom, and becoming independent in looking after themselves. These activities are called self-care.
Difficulties with self-care can makes everyday life challenging for children. These difficulties can affect their long-term health and ability to join in at school and do activities with their friends. Participation in self-care is also considered a core health outcome for all children, but especially for children with motor impairments. Helping children to develop self-care is important but not much is known about who to help, how to help them, and when is a good time.
We will ask young children (under 5 years old) and their parents to get involved in a study where we ask parents questions about the children’s self-care. We will follow them up for three years, contacting them every six months find out how their self-care is developing. We will find out who are struggling, and when they would benefit from help. This will help parents, nurses and therapists to support the right children at the right time.
This research project is a study undertaken in fulfilment of the degree Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and will generate knew knowledge about the development of self-care in young children with and without motor impairments, as well as factors influencing the development of self-care. This will feed into the evidence base for interventions to address challenges in self-care participation, guidelines and policy to increase early life participation in self-care.
