Research summary
Research Summary: Depression is well recognised in adolescents and has been described widely in the literature. Early onset depression (EOD) defined as onset of depression which occurs in youth before the 13th birthday has been rarely investigated.
Though still considered a rare event in childhood there is evidence that those that develop this condition are associated with a more than fourfold increased risk of suicide attempts compared with adult-onset depression. Increased knowledge regarding the number of cases and presentation of these children to the NHS is of importance in helping with recognition of, planning of service provision and developing management approaches for children with this treatable condition. This study will aid in this by identifying all new cases of EOD in the UK and Republic of Ireland presenting to consultant child psychiatrists, allowing a review of the presentation, management and outcome at 1 and 2 years for the child.Summary of research:
Over a thirteen month period, 151 cases of children with ages between 3 and 13 years with first time presentation of depression were notified across the UK and Republic of Ireland by consultants in child and adolescent psychiatry. Of these 151 cases, 29 cases reached the definite casesness threshold using preset criteria.REC name
