Research summary
This project aims to assess if an exercise intervention can have a positive effect on patients experiencing acute exacerbation in their chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) symptoms or present with a Community Acquired Pneumonia
Patients who experience these short term increases in COPD symptoms are usually treated with medication in hospital and then given a 6 week supervised programme of rehabilitative exercise on discharge. In recent years several studies have found that starting the rehabilitation programme while patients are still in hospital improves patient outcomes in length of stay and 6-minute walk test performance (Shah C et al., 2020, Patel S et al, 2020).
This study aims to look at delivering self-directed early mobilisation as an inpatient, with tailored protocols assigned to patients depending on their functional and physical status. This will be a programme which aims to reduce length of stay and improve health-related quality of life, whilst being cost-effective and maximising patient engagement.
