  • Research summary

The Salford Early Intervention Team consists of approximately 15 staff supporting 250 service users coping with difficulties related to a first episode of psychosis. The purpose of this application is to seek ethical approval to support groups of Service Users/'people with lived experience' involved with the Early Intervention (EI) Service to themselves collect, analyse and disseminate research related to topics of their choosing.
The primary purpose of this research is to examine whether 'the conducting of research' can be used as the basis of a therapeutic intervention for people who experience mental health difficulties. The research will involve a group of people with lived experience of mental health difficulties joining a 'Therapeutic Research Group' intervention.
In addition to examining this group intervention (the group members themselves will be active co-researchers in assessing their own groups utility as an intervention), the group will be provided with the skills, resources and autonomy to develop research questions and conduct research into areas of their choosing. In addition to examining the intervention's utility, this Therapeutic Research Group will focus on the following:
    1. Overcoming challenges and barriers to involving service users or people with lived experience in mental health service provision.
    2. Goal setting with service users; understanding the challenges and improving the process for service users and staff.
    3. Evaluating co-researcher participation in this 'Therapeutic Research Group' intervention.
