  • Research summary

This study is exploring the relationship between the speed of early transitions in substance use and later dependence outcomes, specifically time from developing problematic heroin use to seeking treatment and the severity of later dependence. Participants who are currently undergoing opiate substitution treatment for their heroin dependence will be asked to take part in one structured quantitative interview with a researcher, expected to last no more than half an hour. The quantitative interview will ask about their early substance use, the point at which their use became problematic, severe events they have experienced as a result of their opiate use including overdose, and the timing of and reasons for seeking treatment. These data will require informed consent and will be anonymised. Participants will be reimbursed £10 for their participation.
Data will be analysed by the PhD researcher using regression analyses to determine the strength and significance of any associations.
